01. Why has the Viking Adventures resource been created?

This resource is a response to the KS2 History requirement in the revised National Curriculum (2014) for pupils to study "Viking and Anglo-Saxon struggle for the Kingdom of England to the time of Edward the Confessor".

'Viking Adventures at the British Museum' started life as an educational film screened in cinemas around the UK with professional recreations of Viking life, raids and death.

This resource not only includes original footage from the film, but also new, exclusive LGfL filming of curators handling Viking artefacts in the British Museum vaults, plus high-resolution images, new explanatory texts and a series of cross-curricular lesson plans for KS2 teachers.

02. What Key Stage / subjects is the resource for?

'Viking Adventures at the British Museum' is a KS2 resource. It focusses of course on History, but also has lesson links to English, Geography, DT and Computing).

03. Which parts of the National Curriculum does this resource cover?

This resource is a response to the KS2 History requirement in the revised National Curriculum (2014) for pupils to study "Viking and Anglo-Saxon struggle for the Kingdom of England to the time of Edward the Confessor". All cross-curricular links (English, Geography, DT and Computing) are also NC-referenced on the relevant lesson plans.

The LGfL Curriculum Central search tool has also been updated to reflect the wide range of links within the resource and how they link to different parts of the National Curriculum.

04. Is this resource aimed at teachers or for students to use independently?

'Viking Adventures at the British Museum' is designed to support both these approaches. In particular, teachers are encouraged to show the site to students in school so they can 'immerse' themselves in the wider background material in their own time.

05. What are the different ways in which I can use this resource?

The video material is used to support a broad range of complete lesson activities spanning Key Stages 2 to 4. However, teachers are encouraged to modify the suggested activities and tailor them to support the needs of their particular teaching context. Video 'embed' codes allow teachers to disaggregate video material and build their own learning pathways through the curriculum-linked activities.

The resource has also been built to support independent research activities for students into the topics covered.

06. Who can access this resource?

This resource is available to all schools with an LGfL connection, as well as those connected to the National Education Network via a Regional Learning Grid outside London. All teachers and students have access using their school network connection.
